INTERNATIONAL OBJECTIVES

  1. To reach international audiences

  2. To develop multi-lingual dementia care training, online webinars and in-person presentations for international communities.

  3. To present our innovative methods and projects at international conferences on aging.

  4. Support creation of dementia friendly communities worldwide

  5. Network and endorse global initiatives for alternative eldercare options: small group homes, dementia villages and age-in-place communities.

The DEMENTIA LEARNING INSTITUTE book sales and service fees help support the travel expenses of dementia education in Costa Rica, especially the rural areas, where most of the population continues to care for their loved ones in the family home. This is a volunteer-run initiative.

To offer a comprehensive caregiver program focusing on the holistic principles of nurturing the mind, body, and spirit.    

 COURSES

Increasing Communication & Interaction with Persons Experiencing Dementia.

  • The four-part Dementia Communication series provides valuable insights into understanding the altered perception of those experiencing dementia, what causes their behavior, and how to improve your interaction and communication.

  • This course provides basic information on brain function and how dementia changes and affects the neuro-system.

  • Experiencing our empathy-building exercises enables participants to understand the inner world of those experiencing dementia: they step into their shoes.

  • Application of our techniques improves verbal and nonverbal communication and increases the problem-solving skills needed to meet challenges and resolve most situations that arise.

  • The practical care suggestions ease the stress of caregiving and create an atmosphere of trust and harmony, strengthening emotional bonds.

  • Innovative teaching techniques increases the ability to resolve difficult situations while learning methods to manage personal stress and regain a sense of personal empowerment.

Caring for my mother with dementia was exhausting and I was burning out. The Communication & Dementia course provided me with the tools to not only care for her more effectively but also to care for myself.
